Society is an association of all classes of people with common interest, aim and principle. Students are not isolated from society. In a society, they enjoy individual liberty under common discipline.
As social beings they also enjoy certain rights and privileges. So, as the members of society, they are subject to perform certain duties to society.
There are many kinds of social services and students have a lot to do in this sector. Student's service is especially important in poor countries like ours. They can render voluntary services in different spheres of our national life. Most of the people of our country are illiterate. They are not always aware of their social responsibilities and they utterly lack civic consciousness.
During the long vacations the students of our country can go in batches to the villages and help the people understand the various aspects of our national development projects. They can tell the farmers about the importance of the scientific method of cultivation and manuring. Students who are aware of the importance of family planning can argue with the masses to accept the methods of population control. Students can help spread knowledge among the illiterate by setting up night schools in their respective locations. They can make the people conscious of the national progress and keep them in touch with the current progresses of the world by making group discussions. They can motivate people about the importance of health and hygiene.
Female students can teach the illiterate women. In times of flood, famine, cyclone, earthquake and epidemic, the students can come forward to help the people in distress. There are many other duties that students can perform.
